The James L. Yates American Legion Post 9 established the Bombers baseball program in the early 1940's here in Owensboro, KY. The Post wanted to give players an opportunity to develop their skills, personal fitness, leadership qualities and to have more fun. The veterans sponsored program fields a junior team (ages 13-17) and a senior team (ages 16-19). Each team plays a summer schedule of between 30-40 games made up from the regular season, state, national regional and World Series tournaments. Over 1500 players have worn a Bombers uniform over the years. Hundreds have gone on to play in college and more than 30 have gone on to play professional baseball. The program has won 17 Kentucky state championships (2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2008, 1987, 1981, 1978, 1970, 1967, 1966, 1962, 1961, 1960, 1959, 1957 and 1953) with its first coming in 1953 under the leadership of legendary coach Jack Hicks. With a history of unmatched success, the Bombers have created a legacy that has left an indelible mark on our community.
